West Hickman Creek Water testing at Veterans Park
Interested in learning about new, in home methods for testing water quality in your nearby creeks and streams?
Come to our demo and training in Veterans Park on Saturday, April 29 from 2-3:30pm. We will first meet at 1009 Turnberry Ln. to hear a presentation on The Impact of Pet Waste on Water Quality, from Dr. Brad Lee, UK Department of Soil Sciences and Ben Currens, KY DOW.
Next, we'll walk to the newly designed outdoor classroom in the park where Dr. Jason Marion, professor of Environmental Health Science at EKU will give an introduction on the importance of monitoring ecoli, why he developed ColiGlow and how it works.
Lastly, we'll sample and test a portion of the West Hickman Creek for both e-coli and antibiotic resistant e-coli at the stream-side there. The action oriented and colorful ColiGlow tests are a great way for kids to get involved and learn about environmental science.
In partnership with Cumberland Hill Neighborhood Association, we plan to test twice a month from May-Aug 2023. A volunteer sign up sheet and test results will be available on the Hickman Creek Conservancy website at: hickmancreek.org/WestHickmanCreek-E.coliMonitoring
Come join us!
Funding for this testing along with the creation of the Veterans Park outdoor classroom was made possible through an Embrace a Stream Grant awarded to Bluegrass Trout Unlimited in partnership with the Hickman Creek Conservancy.
